Scratchin’ To Survive DJ Mr. King

In support of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, DJ Mr. King will DJ for 24 consecutive hours in an effort to raise $3,000 for breast cancer research and awareness. The event, dubbed Scratchin’ To Survive, will kick off this Friday, October 11 @ 3pm at NEXT Clothing store (located at 837 West Market Street Akron, Ohio in Highland Square).
Scratchin’ To Survive, which will donate ALL proceeds to the American Cancer Society to support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, is a pledge-based event where supporters can go online (www.scratchintosurvive.com) to commit $2 per minute toward the ultimate goal. From the website, donors can track the progress of the goal as well as stay up to date with news, special additions, and more in regards to the event.
“To be able to challenge myself with my passion for a purposeful cause is a great thing,” said King, an Akron native who DJs across the country. “Twenty-four hours is a long time to DJ, but what better way to help others live by doing what you love.”
Scratchin’ To Survive is an open to the public event that will conclude Saturday, October 12 @ 3pm with a special presentation to the American Cancer Society.
Supporters can choose to stop by for a quick peek at the event, or camp out to hear a multi-genre selection of music over night on the storefront. Restaurants in the Highland Square area will have discounted prices in support of the event, in addition to raffle drawings and giveaways at the top of every hour. Footage of the entire event will be streamed live online and documented via social media hourly.

Smart Snacking for an Active Lifestyle Part 2

Looking for healthier options to your usual snack suspects?
Nutrition can be confusing and overwhelming. We’re bombarded with snack options every
day—some good, some bad, and some just plain ugly. Here’s a quick nutritional comparison
to help in the battle for GetFIT fitness:

Eat This:

Pretzels
Serving size: 17 pretzels
Calories: 110
Total fat: 1g

Graham Crackers
Serving size:  8 small
  crackers
Calories: 130
Total fat: 3.5g

Dark Chocolate
Serving size: 1.7oz
Calories: 90
Total fat: 5.5g

Not This:

Nacho Cheese Chips
Serving size: 12 chips
Calories: 140
Total fat: 7g

Chocolate Chip
Cookies
Serving size: 1 cookie
Calories: 140
Total fat: 7g

Milk Chocolate
Candy Pieces
Serving size: one bag
Calories: 240
Total fat: 10g

My opinion on all this health stuff is if you LOVE to EAT BAD FOODS, you must LOVE TO WORKOUT/EXERCISE EVEN MORE!!!!!

Smart Snacking for an Active Lifestyle Part 1

Smart Snacking for an Active Lifestyle

Regular snacking is vital to a healthy and active lifestyle. Fitness-friendly snacks should be quick, delicious, and balanced to satisfy your exercise and nutrition needs (as well as your hectic schedule). Active women should aim for snacks in the 100- to 200-calorie range (active men may need a bit more) and keep in mind, you may need to eat up to two snacks a day between meals to keep your energy levels steady all day long.

Fruit and Yogurt

Fresh fruit provides carbohydrates for quick energy. Pineapple, orange, and kiwi fruit are packed with vitamin C, a powerful nutrient for joints and connective tissue that also boasts antioxidant properties. Yogurt and almonds add protein and healthy fat to make this fruit salad super satisfying. Enjoy for a mid-day snack a few hours before your afternoon workout.

Fresh and Light Salad

A simple salad makes a perfect mini-meal. Green beans are low in calories (1 cup contains only 35) and navy beans are a good source of magnesium for muscle building and bone health. Vitamins C and A from fresh vegetables and a sprinkle of calcium-rich cheese add up to a tasty and nutritious snack that won’t leave you searching for the nearest vending machine.

Portable Snack Mix ***MY FAVORITE***

Why spend extra money on packaged snack mixes when you can make your own? This mix of cereal, pretzels, crackers, and spices is chock full of energy-boosting carbohydrates. Experiment with different spices to create your own signature flavors. Have a few handfuls along with a piece of fruit before a workout, or pair up with a protein-rich string cheese after a workout.
